Piotr Ponikowski, MD PHD, FESC, FHFA is the professor of cardiology, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs and the Head of Department of Heart Diseases at Wroclaw Medical University, Poland. He is also the Head of Centre for Heart Diseases at University Hospital, Wroclaw, Poland.
Professor Ponikowski is the President of Polish Cardiac Society and Member of Heart Failure Association Board (2004-present). He served as the President of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology (2010-2012) and was the Councilor of the European Society of Cardiology board (2012-2014). He has been involved in the development of several ESC guidelines as the member of the ESC Committee for Practice Guidelines and was the Chair of the 2016 ESC Heart Failure Guidelines. He is also a member of editorial boards for several cardiology-focused journals.
Professor Ponikowski serves as an advisor and consultant for the range of pharmaceutical companies and has been a member of international steering/executive committees and endpoint committees of numerous clinical trials.
His research interests focus on the pathophysiology and management of acute and chronic heart failure, and recently particularly on the aspects of iron deficiency and reflex control in the cardiorespiratory system. Co-author of more than 650 peer-reviewed papers, total number of citations: >70000 h-index=104; selected among Highly Cited Researchers by Thomson Reuters 2016, 2017, 2018.
